- anti-racism education
- anti-bullying programs
- conflict resolution and mediation training
- peer support
- road safety education
- the Healthy School Canteen Strategy.
For more information, visit the student wellbeing section of the department’s website.
Like all NSW public schools, we promote the healthy development of students through:
- school programs and practices that protect and promote health and safety
- supporting individual students who need help with health issues
- providing first aid and temporary care of students who become unwell or who have an accident at school.
Student wellbeing
Like all NSW public schools, we provide safe learning and teaching environments to encourage healthy, happy, successful and productive students.
The department is committed to creating quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing through positive and respectful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging to the school and community.
The Wellbeing Framework for Schools helps schools support the cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of students and allows them to connect, succeed and thrive throughout their education.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning – a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop. Our whole school community works together to establish expected behaviours and teach them to all students.
At Marrickville West, all Year 6 students are considered leaders. We try and encourage our students to be leaders in the classroom, in the playground and whenever they are wearing their uniform representing the school with pride.
Students are encouraged to show their leadership skills through their support for other students, their representation and involvement in academic, sporting, cultural or community events and projects.
Kindness awards 2.0
Every week the school choose agents who work throughout the week looking for unassuming, caring, helpful and kind people that deserved an award for their overall good behaviour. At the end of the week the original agents secretly choose 2 new agents for the following fortnight. The terms and conditions for these awards are
- students cannot be chosen twice
- students have to be from Years 3-6
- students have to be respectful all the time, even when teachers are not watching.
May the kindness spread like wildfire.
End of Year 6
The last stretch of primary school comes with all the year six end of primary school privileges. We vote on the design which has all of our names including our teachers on the back but we acknowledge the fact that this top comes with big responsibilities. Every year the design is different and are framed and placed on the library wall for all to see.
Transition process
Like every year when you finally get to the end of primary school, we start thinking about high school. Never did it ever cross our minds that this was going to be a 'process'.
As Year 6 students we have been working very hard to fill out our transition to high school forms. Some of us have chosen to opt for selective schools which requires sitting a test for selective programs such as performing arts which require auditions. Lots of us have been inspired by sport whereas others are inspired by visual arts.
Most students are going to their local high schools though some of us are seeking placement outside our catchment area which is a more complex process that requires a lot of time and meetings with our teachers to help us.
We spent a lot of time talking about our local schools with our teachers and families and some of us came in for meetings to help us with these important decisions that will impact our futures.
We are thankful for the time our teachers spent with us on this. We are a very lucky Year 6.
