Principal's welcome

I am delighted to welcome new students and their families to Marrickville West Primary School.

Marrickville West is a community centred school, providing quality education in a dynamic, inclusive and supportive learning environment. We are committed to working together with families to ensure students are given the greatest opportunity to reach their personal best through educational experiences that are founded in educational "best-practice" and target the needs of each individual. Our school is enhanced by an active parent body and partnerships throughout the wider community.

Marrickville West Primary School has an inclusive enrolment policy. Educational programs are built around a continuum of learning with tasks differentiated to meet the range of learning needs. Teachers provide whole class, group and individual learning opportunities for every child. Where practical, learning support staff and volunteers work within classrooms, with class teachers to maximise the educational opportunities and support for all students.

Our policy for gifted and talented education also includes "enrichment" opportunities for students Kindergarten to Year 6 and project-based learning modules for the extension of those students with a particular talent or interest in an area of study. We often work with partners such as Sydney University, The Conservatorium of music, Marrickville Council or the Australian theatre for young people to provide enhanced opportunities for our students in areas such as environmental science and the arts.

Every child at Marrickville West has the opportunity to learn a language other than English as part their regular school curriculum. We encourage students to expand their creative capacity through special programs in creative arts (visual arts, music, dance and drama). Our specialist music teachers provide opportunities for classes, ensembles, band and choirs to learn and perform both within and beyond the school.

Our community garden, the kitchen garden program, The eco water garden (in partnership with Marrickville Council), earth kids gardening project, "we are all Cooks River people" and various other programs and local partnerships, teach children to better understand, respect and care for their environment.

Connect Marrickville is a community centre on site providing services and support to local families with young children. Programs include supported playgroups, adult education, community projects and parenting workshops.

Computer technology is an integral part of our students' learning experience. All classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and networked computers. Students are able to access the internet via desktop computers in their classrooms, Ipads,  mini laptops, a computer area in the school library and a dedicated computer room.

I welcome the opportunity to talk with parents and members of our community. Please contact the school office to arrange an appointment or for information about school tours.
