Aims and achievements

Marrickville West P&C takes pride in giving to our school - the school that provides our children with such a wonderful education.

We do that in many ways:

  • through feedback to the school on issues we think are important. The Principal (or another Executive Staff Member) is present at all P&C meetings. We send parent representatives to school planning meetings and any other committees we are asked to by the school.
  • providing programs that complement the school's curriculum (banking to teach financial literacy and a school band program).
  • advocating for new services such as our campaign to get the Marrickville Council's eco garden built in our school, safer pedestrian crossings and school holiday care programs.
  • promoting how wonderful our school is - both through word of mouth and other means such as newspaper stories, internet forums, signage and this website.
  • helping to run school events such as the art program that culminated in our carnival of creativity.
  • collaborating with the school and coonect to run various events and programs such as the holiday club, paint Marrickville REaD literacy program and Mother's and Father's Day stalls.
  • applying for grants to help the school pay for better facilities and run programs such as netball and swimming classes.
  • helping to lobby for better facilities in all schools that will, in turn, benefit our children.
  • collecting money for community causes such as families in need.
  • providing social get-togethers so the school community can get to know each other, such as the welcome BBQ and communal dinners.
  • raising money to spend on things that enhance our kid's education or opportunities at school.

Fundraising

By fundraising and applying for grants, we are able to put aside funds to spend on projects big and small. Some of the projects we've raised money for in the past years include:

  • buying iPads, computers, digital cameras and a printer for the school.
  • buying equipment for the kitchen garden program.
  • providing money for disadvantaged families to buy uniforms and pay for excursions.
  • ensuring all children can attend the end of year picnic by helping pay for the buses.
  • providing money to buy books for the reading encouragement program.
  • subsidising an intensive swimming program for all the students.
  • providing afternoon teas for the homework club that runs after school 2 days a week.
  • contributing money to the Year 5/6 farewell.
  • providing teachers with a thank you breakfast for Teacher's day.
  • making library bags to give to each new Kindergarten child at the transition to school program.
  • providing a citizenship award for each class at the end of year assembly.

There are also big projects that we are garnering funds for over multiple years such as making the top asphalt area more appealing. In recent years our biggest spending project was a new nature-based adventure playground which was installed in 2015 and which was paid for by 10 years of parent fundraising and a grant from the State Government Community Building Partnership.

If you have any suggestions for fundraising ideas or would like to help out with any of the projects then we'd love to hear from you. You can email us at marrickvillewestpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au or come along to our next meeting.
