Community garden

Marrickville West community garden continues to grow more beautiful and productive with every season.

The garden is located on school land at the rear of Marrickville West Public School. Entry gates to the garden are on Henson Street and through the school grounds via Beauchamp Road.

Working bees are held on the last Sunday of the month, 2pm to 4pm or 3pm to 5pm in during daylight savings. If you are interested in becoming a member of the garden, come to a working bee and meet some friendly gardeners. By becoming a member of the community garden you will meet a diverse range of people from all parts of the community whose common interest is gardening.

You could join to be part of one of the 4 community groups where you can learn about gardening, sustainable practices or to have a personal plot to grow your own food, but some people join because it's such a special place to be. The community garden has 3 worm farms, 8 compost bins, a garden shed with an information board and a Yahoo group site. There is a fruit orchard with various citrus and two plum trees and a new area planted with young fig trees. An Aussie native garden is filled with plants from the local area.

The schools ‘earth kids' learn about sustainability and how to garden with teacher Roberta Kennedy and grow vegetables and flowers in their well-tended plots.
