Rules and policies

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Visit the NSW Department of Education’s policy library for all current operational policies.

Our school uses the department's School Community Charter to ensure all of our communication is collaborative and respectful.

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent and remain in school, employment or training until they turn 17.

School rules and merit system

At Marrickville West Primary School we will acknowledge, encourage and reinforce behaviour that is consistent with the expectations of our school.

The three rights and related rules encourage students to accept responsibility for the impact of their behavioural choices, to make and accept healthy and safe decisions and to monitor and apply self-management to their own behaviour. Restorative practice underpins our response to discipline and behavioural issues. At Marrickville West, we focus on developing and restoring strong and respectful relationships with each other.

School rules

Our students know to:

  • respect yourself and others
  • always do your best
  • play safely.

We all have the right to be treated with respect, learn in a positive environment and feel safe.

Classroom strategies

  • Teachers will implement strategies to promote positive behavioural choices in class.
  • The strategies will be developed to suit the particular goals, needs and interests of the students.
  • Class and individual behaviour strategies may exist independently of the whole school system, or be connected through the receipt of an 'assembly award' acknowledge an agreed level of achievement or reach a set goal.
  • Class teachers will monitor reading for homework and present a book prize to every student who completes and records 100 nights of home reading during the year.

Certificates and awards

Assembly award

An assembly award is a small certificate that is awarded to acknowledge positive behaviour, effort or achievement. Members of staff will generally prepare 2 certificates to be presented fortnightly at assembly.

School award

A school award is a large certificate that is presented to students who earn 10 assembly awards. The student's name will be published in the super star section of the school newsletter. These large certificates acknowledge significant effort or achievement and will also be awarded at honour assemblies (held at the end of each term) and at the annual school presentation day.

School medallion

A school medal is awarded for the achievement of 5 large certificates. The student's name is published in the super star section of the school newsletter.

House points

Our school has three houses (teams):

  • Cooks – green
  • Georges – blue
  • Wolli – red.

House points will be awarded to students for their participation and achievement in school sports carnivals and for behaviour relating to general school organisation, cooperation and teamwork. House points given for behaviour will usually be awarded in multiples of 10.  A tally of house points earned by students in each class over the fortnight will be displayed in their classroom. House points can be given to any student by any teacher. A house points ticket (or similar signed note) will inform the student's class teacher to record the points on the class tally.

House captains will collect totals and record the results for each class as follows:

  • 30 points – first place
  • 20 points – second place
  • 10 points – third place.

Adjusted class totals will be added together and fortnightly results in the house point competition announced at the following assembly.

The house that earns the most points each term will celebrate with a special Principal's disco. A cumulative record will be kept and added to the points earned at the annual athletics, cross country and swimming carnivals to decide the winning house for the year and recipient of the house shield.
